Dragon fruit (pitaya) originated in Central America and was cultivated by ancient Aztec and Mayan civilizations. The fruit was brought to Asia by French colonists in the 19th century.

Asian Expansion

Vietnam, Thailand, and other Asian nations rapidly adopted dragon fruit cultivation, turning it into a major commercial crop. Vietnam became the world's largest producer.

African Introduction

Dragon fruit arrived in Africa through Israel and other Mediterranean countries. South African farmers began experimenting with cultivation in the Limpopo and KwaZulu-Natal provinces.
